計画地は、亀戸駅より下町風情溢れる商店街を抜け、古い建物と新しい建物が混在する住宅密集地の一角にある。その中でも前面道路は、主要道路に繋がる生活道路のそのまた先の生活道路、あるいは裏路地という表現の方が適するほどで、幅員はわずか1.8m。当然車が通る事はなく、のんびりとした空気が漂っている。路地は大概無計画に幅を変え、曲がりくねり、突然消える事もある。それに沿って建つ建物もまた、各々が好きなように空地をつくり、思いのままに建っている。そんなルールなき街並みが、かえってこの地域の特異性、あらたな秩序を生み出しているようにも見える。そこで、その新たに生み出された秩序に則って計画を進めた。当計画地の前面道路は、外側に「くの字」に折れ曲がるが、それと呼応することなく、建物の壁面線は一連なりである。その壁面線に沿うように建物を配置し、街並みを調整すると共に、周囲の空地と連動させて、近隣のコミュニティのきっかけづくりを目論んでいる。一方、街並みを意識する中で、共用廊下や画一的な外観など、賃貸住宅にありがちなボキャブラリーを排除することを心がけた。近所にも何軒かあるが、そうなった瞬間、そこだけそっぼを向いたような印象になる。結果として、一戸建てのような立ち居振る舞いになっている。では一戸建ての住宅のように建つ建物の中で、4組の住人がいかに暮らすか。前述した路地がそのヒントとなった。一戸建ての住宅において全方位に開放できるのと同様の感覚をそれぞれが感じ、共有しながら暮らせる住空間をつくりたいと考えた。内部空間は、駅からの道と同じく、徐々に細くなっていく路地がそのまま立体的に展開する構成とした。住人はくねくねと旋回しながら、路地のようなスケールの隣段を上り下りする。路地にはみ出たご近所さんの植物や自転車をすいすいよけながら歩くように、住人は、自分の好きなものをよけ、時に跨いでその路地階段を上り下りする。その道中で、各方位に設けた窓から垣間見える隣家の壁や屋根、空……それらの連続的な体験は、路地を歩む時のそれと同様である。確高の設定とも相まって、階ごとの距離も縮まり、より一連なりの空間が生まれた。1,2階を低くおさえ。3階を高く開放する階高の変化は、隣家のそれとの間にギャップを生み出し、直接的な窓の干渉を避ける。そうする事で、住宅密集地でのよりよい住まい方を提案している。みんなで寄り添い、環境を享受しながら、この下町特有の心地よい中に暮らす。

ALLEY HOUSE
The site is located in the downtown of Kameido station, at the corner of a dense residential area where traditional and new buildings coexist. One of the adjacent streets leads to the main road, and another one, with as few as 1.8m width, confers a certain peace and offers a laid-back air. This typology of alleys creates a cityscape of free spaces scattered by the streets’ random variations, their winding, downsizing and sometimes disappearing.　Following this local structure, the arbitrary order is the opportunity to play with the shape that buildings and public space generate.
While the front road bends outward in a “dog legged” shape, the façade, on the contrary, follows the regular building’s plan, breaking the alley shape and creating an irregular empty space on its threshold. By aligning the project with its adjoined constructions and adding a punctual gap, we aimed to integrate the building into its urban surroundings while encouraging interactions within the local community in a space free of uses. Besides, we tried to eliminate the common vocabulary of rental houses, such as shared corridors, and uniform exteriors.　To do so, the entrance sequence is built like a scene where neighbors and residents can truly enjoy this space by investing it and meeting their neighbors.
Despite being a rental house of 4 units, we wanted the residents to feel like they have the privilege of the whole building, like a detached house. The notion of alley was then inspiring to design the structure of each apartment.　Meandering around the interior facades, the stairs are placed gradually from the first to the third floor, narrowing and winding like if the alleys became three dimensional. The residents can enjoy a living space opening from each façade. Experiencing it can enhance the relationship with their environment, by truly appropriate each “side” of their neighborhood.　It is an active experience to climb up and down between spaces, each belonging to a local direction. Along the way, the windows overlook a roof, the adjacent façade, the sky. The residents have to play by avoiding their favorite plants and books gathered on the stairs endorsing the double role of furniture and construction element. The first and second floors have been shortened to shift the third floor dedicated to the living space, so to avoid overlooking the neighbors’ windows.　The use of these stairs is similar to the continuous experience they have, walking through some hidden alleys towards the station.
These attentions should support a better way to live both privately in this densely populated area, and call the freedom to enjoy the unique atmosphere and the multiple facets of the neighborhood.
