「ガリバーゾーン」は閑静な住宅街に建ち、大きくふたつの特徴を持たせた木造賃貸併用住宅である。ひとつの特徴は建物全体の部屋の割り付けである。当初は3つの賃貸と、ひとつの大きなオーナーゾーン内に住まいと仕事場を求められたが、それをあえて4つの独立したユニットとし、将来自由に賃貸できるよう設計した。これによりオーナーは、子どもの成長や事業の状態に合わせ、所有区分を調整でき、またすべて賃貸にすることも可能である。これらの使い方が可能な今回の構成は、オーナーの要望でもある「建物に拘束されない生活」に対するひとつの提案になっている。もうひとつの特徴は、各室の高さの扱いである。今日、敷地が特別郊外でなければ、建物を建てるにあたり社会制度からくる高さ制限を受ける。本敷地の場合は高度斜線と日影規制対象外建築物にするため、10mの制限がかかる。よってこの高さの制約をひとつの思考のきっかけとした。ここで、あえて天井高さを低くおさえた場所をつくり、「ガリバーゾーン」と名付け、これを大きな室に関連付け、その関係を操作した。「ガリバーソゾーン」の天井高さは1.3m程度、一般的な身長の大人は立ったまま入ることができないが、小さな子どもたちは自由に駆け回れる、といった身長による住み分けがおこる点と、立つ、すわる、ねころがるといった体勢の変化により空間の印象が変わる点がこの値を設定した大きな理由である。通常、このようなゾーンは裏方の暗い収納等の閉じた室とされることが多いが、今回はあえて窓側の、しかも開放的な位置に持っていくことにした。それにより通常の部屋、ここではダイニングからこのスペースを介して外部を認識することになる。「ガリバーゾーン」ではフルオープンの開口を採用したが、これは寸法を認識するきっかけを希薄にできるためである。低い天井高さをあたかも一般的な階の高さと認識させることで、平面的な広がりも感じさせている。かつて、スウィフトが 『ガリバー旅行記』でガリバーを現実にあり得ない国々に漂流させ、生きる価値について考えさせたように、本建物でも一般的な住宅における割り付け、天井高さを少しばかり操作することで、今までの日常でありながらそれとは異なる関係や感動を呼び込めればと考えている。そして、さらなる住人の生活に期待するものである。

GULLIVER HOUSE
Built in a quiet residential area, the project is defined by 2 major characteristics. The first one is the allocation of rooms throughout the building. Initially, we were asked to provide 3 distinguished rental units including the owner’s house in a larger one. But instead, we suggested designing 4 independent units to envisage their different management in the future. Therefore, the owner could adjust the status of each unit depending on their children’s growth and their business state, with a possibility to rent them all eventually.
The second characteristic is its specific composition which follows the motto “A life not restrained by buildings”, which was also the idea that the owner wanted to develop here. Besides, considering the construction rules that apply to these common residential areas, the overall height was limited to 10m because this building wasn’t subject to the method of high grade diagonal lines and share restriction. To incorporate this motto while responding to the construction rules, we dared to imagine a floor which the ceiling was kept low, inspired by “Gulliver’s travel”. This “Gulliver” zone is about 1.3m height. Adults and standard heights cannot enter while standing up, but small children can run around freely. The height changes the impression of space depending on our posture, such as sitting, rolling, standing. Usually, this kind of space is closed and left back as a dark storage. This time, we wanted to explore the possibilities that such a space can generate. We decided to attribute a wide dimension plan, and extend its height to the windows’ frame in its wider open aperture. The effect of this ratio is perceptive from the outside, where the Gulliver zone appears as an usual room, because the lecture of the floor is disabled. Just like Swift’s “Gulliver’s Travels” drove Gulliver into countries where he couldn’t exist, he realized the value of living. Similarly, by manipulating the layout and the ceiling height of a typical residential building, we hope to bring a different excitement from everyday life.
